I didn’t mention it on the episode but I stepped up my mask game and have the best new face mask.I randomly found this cute face mask online and 1000% had to have it because:

Recently all public restrooms were closed due to the pandemic – but what’s a runner to do if you have to pee while out on a run?! So today I’m examining a disposable urinal that might stop you from having to decide between peeing behind a tree and risking arrest or cutting your run short. Don’t make it weird. fine – let’s start off with a warm up!

Warm-Up: 
I’ve made a decision to just step forward and train for a fall marathon as if the world is delighted and healthy. My rough draft plan for this year was to run a half marathon every month as a solid training run and run a marathon in the fall and one in the winter. 

But we’ve all been foiled by the evil villain – Coronavirus. Boo.

So marathons and half marathons… races of all distances have been cancelled or changed to virtual runs all around the world.

Anyway… 

The new York City Marathon, originally scheduled for Nov 1st was officially cancelled this week. 

Many runners barely started training for it considering that it’s a full training cycle out! 

Just like I said about the Boston Marathon cancellation in a previous episode – this seems like bad news for other races scheduled before or around that date.

All of this is to say – I’m sorry if you were planning on running Boston, nyc or any other race that’s been cancelled this year. It sucks. 

And it sucks that we don’t know when life will get back to ‘normal’ or at least a new normal. We don’t know when big races will be able to host thousands of runners at their start line. having a certain date or light at the end of the tunnel would be great. 

Since there are a lot more unknowns than knowns – we’re kind of all on our own to decide what to train for, how hard to train, what races to register for, if we must take time off or use this time to get in the best race ready shape ever!

As someone who runs best when I’m running a lot of races – it’s hard for me to improve without them. 

My ‘speed work’ if you could call it that has generally been half marathon races as tempo runs in the past. (Just doing that and not mid-week speed work indicated I had a terrific workout but wasn’t also fatiguing myself during training runs and had time to recover. I wouldn’t recommend this for everyone but it worked with my type C personality and need to be social at races because I don’t have friends.)

Anyway. 

It’s tempting for me to fall off the marathon training wagon and just run random miles everyday for fun. but that’s what I was doing last year and this year I wanted to train hard. 

So I have a choice – 

I can accept that there are no races and just run for fitness and fun… 

OR 

I can train for a fall marathon like I originally planned and if all the races are cancelled – run it essentially to see where my fitness is on race day. 

And I’ve made a decision to train to run a marathon in the fall. I’d love to run a ‘real’ in person big city marathon… but I realize that’s highly unlikely and I don’t want to do it at the cost of my health or any individual else’s health. So it might be virtual and that’s okay. 

I just don’t want to wait until I know 100% for sure the race will be held – because we might not know that until next year. 

I think if I had an remarkable race year last year I’d be a lot more likely to just run for fun. and I think that might be the wiser choice! but given the speed bumps I faced last year – freezing my eggs and then breaking a bone in my foot… I feel so out of shape. I want to train for a marathon even if it is the first Run eat Repeat Marathon Fiesta!

So… I started a short daily check-in to paper my marathon training on Run eat Repeat.com. That’s why I originally started RER – to paper training for my first marathon 10 years ago!!

And over the years I’ve blogged about so much running and eating. but I personally like to get updates on video or podcasts – so I’m doing it that way this time. 

For now it’s a daily check-in on Run eat Repeat (every week day) on video. I might share the audio on the podcast down the road – the check-ins are fairly short so I don’t know if it would be worth it to do that. but you can see it on Run eat Repeat.com – I’ll put a link in the show notes.

I tried the travel Jane – a portable personal urinal for women and have a review, ideas on how to use it and where to get it.

I’m training for a marathon and with the recent closure of public restrooms, restaurants, stores and a lot more – there was nowhere to go pee while out on a run. So I made a decision to BYOPB (bring your own pee bag) and try this disposable urinal bag.

Fighting for four

I stalled on going for my run and that’s always bad news. After I woke up I checked email, made lunches and did some  Internet research before getting ready to go. By that time it was after 9am and my stomach felt empty so I had some cereal…

For some reason I was not feeling the run today and ended up fighting for four miles. I took several walk breaks and would have cut it short if it wasn’t an out and back route. Oh well, that doesn’t happen very often to me and I’m chalking it up to post-marathon recovery ?

I made a super big smoothie for breakfast. It ended up filling two glasses and I enjoyed them both.

I added some cereal to the top of the refill. But, I really should have added toast with PB instead. This big smoothie did not make me full at all. I need to eat a real breakfast or more filling snack if I am going to exercise so late. When I wait too long to eat it throws off my hunger all day. I’ve decided to eat within 30 minutes of waking up if I’m not going to exercise right away.After trying to let my smoothie expand in my stomach for 20 minutes I went back to the kitchen for a big handful of trail mix – heavy on the cashews. I needed fat to make me full! much better now ?

Question: how long after you wake up do you eat? I’ve heard you should eat within about 30 min to 1 hour after waking to “break the fast” and wake up your metabolism.

My first 5K

When I subscribed for the Carlsbad 5000 at the Tinker Bell half expo I swore it was my first 5K. My first race ever was a 10K from there I jumped straight to half marathons and fell in love with lucky number 13 (point one).

But, it turns out I ran a 5K on fourth of July two years ago! The thing is, it was a last minute run with a friend so I didn’t pre-register or train or really consider it anything but a time to hang out with Susan.

I completely forgot until today! My brain doesn’t work sometimes, good thing I have the blog to remember stuff for me.

Well, let’s still call this my first 5K considering that that race wasn’t timed so I have no idea how I did!

I have 6 weeks until my first 5K. I don’t plan on this becoming a reoccurring distance so I want to have a good race and leave it at that.

After way too much time researching plans (I get off on this in a sick way) I made a decision to combine a few and mostly center it around the Hal Higdon 5k and half Marathon training programs. I have a 10 miler and a few halfs coming up after this so I need to keep the distance on the higher side. 

If we’re being sincere I really haven’t stuck to a training program considering that my first half marathon, so the goal is to stay on track.

(I switch the days because I’m mostly a LR on Saturday girl.)

As I have no idea in any way what pace I must be running for this short distance I used the McMillan Running Calculator to help. It said my 5K pace must be about 7:23. apparently it thinks I’m part cheetah because there is no way my orange ass can go that fast.  (image source)

I suspect I’m a lot more slow twitch than fast twitch muscle, so I’m going to have to mess around with the paces to find my delighted pace.

The race is April 1st, so we’ll see if the joke’s on me.

In food news, I ate a pita pizza for dinner after my favorite dinner question got too lots of of us talking about it. I love pizzzzzzaaa!

Now there’s watermelon on my computer and Ben just got home from work.

1. I saw poor Grandpa the other night (that film with Johnie Knoxville) as well as truly liked it. Like, full on laughed.

2. in some cases I purposely go to church late so I don’t have to do that part where you talk to the people around you. It’s just uncomfortable for me, which is weird since I truly like satisfying new people under every other situation in the world.

I truly really dislike doing planks. as well as I had this bright concept to do a plank while listening to Tina’s What’s app messages. however because I told her that I hold a plank while I listen she keeps making her messages at least one minute long – this morning it was 1:30 as well as I was mad at her.

Luckily, I multi-task.

4. somebody explained that I’ve been drinking a great deal much more lately. Yes.

I’m not concerned about it though… so I don’t even though if that’s a confession as much as an acknowledgment/cheers!

5. I truly desired a Reese’s PB cup last night, however didn’t have any. So I melted some dark chocolate as well as PB together. I was good, however not the same.

Weird Waffle Wednesday

I understood I had Kashi waffles in the freezer that were on their last leg so I wished to make them for Waffle Wednesday this morning. But, one waffle was a great deal thicker as well as a bit bigger around then the other! It resulted in one of them getting burnt in the toaster even though I cooked them for the exact same amount of time.

I topped the waffles with greek yogurt mixed with chia seeds, pumpkin butter as well as my new obsession TJ’s almond butter.

Hot Sauce like

I only found my like for hot sauce in the last two years. even though I grew up in Pico Rivera (where there was an earthquake this morning!!!), in a Mexican home that was never short on salsa or Tapatio I always stayed away from anything remotely hot.

But now that I have opened up my world to hot sauce I can’t get enough! I currently have five different type of it in my cupboards. My present fave is this one: Ben as well as I are consumed with it!

While I am eating I put a bit bit on each bite. Does anyone else do this? I truly believe we requirement one more bottle of it since Ben as well as I just pass it back as well as forth while we’re eating. We requirement our own bottles of it ?

Hot sauce went excellent with the egg sandwich I produced breakfast. somebody just recently asked if I eat eggs or egg beaters/egg whites. Lately I have been eating the Costco brand of egg whites since I bought a situation of them.

I do eat whole eggs too. I really have been buying Eggland’s finest eggs since I won Tina’s contest before Christmas. I won a six month supply!!

But, Ben likes eggs as well as goes with them before I can eat more than one or two ? He was more happy than I was when I won that contest.

I decided to avoid the fitness center this morning as well as just do my hip moves as well as take a walk. I believed it would save me a long time since I have a lot of tasks to total today. Wrong! I’m running later than I would have if I’d have went to the gym. Boo.

Random Fact: My sibling as well as his good friends sing, “Put some hot sauce on my burrito baby!!!” I believed it was from a genuine tune of something, however I believe they just made it up one night when they were drunk tired.

Question: anyone else online in SoCal as well as feel the earthquake this morning?? have you ever felt an earthquake?

Fun truth #2: Last year there was a little earthquake while I was at work. I was in the middle of putting on cosmetics as well as speaking to my friend, Adriel. When the earthquake started we kept speaking then lastly went under my desk since our manager was yelling at everybody to get under their desks. It wasn’t huge sufficient for most of us native Californians to care!

I grabbed my cosmetics as well as kept applying it beneath the desk as well as we continued our conversation as if nothing was wrong ? I miss Adriel…

No. That is not what happens. The GPS actually says, “Re-calculating…” and finds you a new way to your destination.

What do you tell yourself when you go the wrong way on your diet plan? Do you calmly re-calculate and get back on track or do you berate yourself?

My day started really well. I had a meal plan all set up and my morning snack was almonds and an apple.

That snack didn’t hold me over for long so I ate lunch (mexican pizza) and one of these bars.

Everything was going terrific until my afternoon snackage. I went a little crazy with the chocolate chips.  I have to admit that I really want to get very mad at myself. That’s not going to help anything, but it’s hard not too be pissed when you’re bloated and coming down from a sugar high.

They were part of my afternoon snack, but I went a little crazy after this.

Well, now I’m re-calculating and getting back on track ?

I ate a healthy dinner of beans, brussels

and part of Ben’s potato skin. That thing was as good and gooey as it looks. I had a small dove square for dessert and now I’m calling it a night.

This is kinda gross, but Ben and I still had the wish bone from T-day hanging around so we grabbed a side and made a wish.

Chocolate covered Strawberries

Last night after posting (and therefore omitted from the blog) I had chocolate covered strawberries for dessert. Amazing! all day today I dreamt about tonight’s dessert…

Dinner was a last minute change of plans. I realized that Ben has alternate dinner plans for tomorrow night and our guac would be brown or I would eat it all (most likely the latter).

Since I didn’t want to eat the entire container of guac in two days I had to incorporate it into dinner… burnt brussels and sad looking taco salad. Don’t you worry, I added chips after the picture (I knew you were worried about that).

Dessert or not to dessert…that is the question.

Question: how often do you eat dessert or a dessert-like snack?

Me: I used to have to have dessert or a “treat” every day, but I’ve been cutting back a bit. I do notice that the more sugar I eat the more I crave. Which is kinda weird…

I would have thought that eating a treat would satisfy my sweet tooth, but it only makes me want more. Is anyone else like that?

I’m curious if that’s a taste bud or blood sugar issue??

There were over 3,000 exhibits and the place was packed!

Most of the attendees are vendors or work for vendors. So there are tons of samples and information on new health products and food. The booths are hoping vendors will like what they see/smell/taste and sell it at their store.

My store is right here on ol’ RER so I’m going to share with you the

“Best in show from the natural products Expo”…

I tried so many different things I lost track and didn’t take pictures of everything. but I did make sure to note the important things.

We should start with drinks (just like in real life!)…

I’m excited about this whey protein powder made from milk of grass fed cows. It tasted smooth, but was made with almond milk not water. I think the true test is when it’s made with water.

I spotted my favorite protein powder, Spirutein and had a long heart to heart with a lady there (ah, forgot her name!). Anyways, I told her my dilemma that I am trying to get away from soy and she reassured me that it’s only 1/3 soy and non-GMO. So I feel a little better about it and she gave me a sample of my fave flavor in whey. This might fix everything!

There were several milk replacement options – hemp milk, soy milk, almond milk, grain milk… from different companies.

I tried the sunflower seed milk. Eh, it might have to grow on me.

Not a fan of the grain milk. yes a fan of hemp though.

The winner of the best Milk Replacement at the show award goes to this new Almond Milk with Protein! I’m excited about this since I love almond milk, but typically still buy regular milk for the protein content.

The show had a lot of same products made by different companies. tons of granola, yogurt, protein bars and chips or salty snack options.

I tried more bars than Snooki back in her party days and here are the ones I’m most excited about (read taste like dessert, but I don’t have to sneak buying a Snickers)…

Zing’s Dark chocolate Hazelnut bar

Best new concept bar goes to Dr. Praegers for this Froat bar. Doesn’t the name sound like something a blogger would call their homemade granola bar? Anyways, you keep them in the freezer and the girl told me to eat it while it’s still cold.

Best bar made out of a bean (chickpeas!!!) goes to The good Bean. You know my chickpea obsession muscle is going crazy for this one!

They also make chickpea snacks!

Protein Bar that tastes most like a Rice Krispy Award:

Favorite Gel maker award – Honey Stinger Dark chocolate Almond (delicious!!)

Best Body in show goes to this guy who was demonstrating how sweet he looks when he sweats

Oooh, this is some good chocolate…

You guys know I love big drinks and I cannot lie. Luckily, there were tons of drink options including a Zevia booth that I may have visited 3 or 4 times…

I came across the NuNaturals booth that will soon offer an option to flavor your water or sparkling water!

I also chugged an all natural energy drink.

As if that weren’t enough, I attended a lunch put on my Nature’s Path. The CEO and founder of the company Arran Stephens spoke a little about being committed to non-GMO food. and encouraged everyone to support California’s right To know initiative. We’ll discuss this on Monday, but it’s very important!

Another substantial part of the show were all the gluten free options. everything is available gluten free. I’m surprised they didn’t have gluten free gluten!

I tried a lot of the gluten free snacks and breads out of curiosity and think you just have to get used to the different textures and tastes. But, it’s nice to know people with g-free peeps have options.

I have wanted to try these gluten free donuts (in the frozen section) for the longest time. They are typically near the Vitatops so I’m familiar. Yeah, glad I have never bought them. Not a fan.

But, I was a fan of their multi-grain bread.

Best Tidbit of info I Learned… the brown boxed Boca burgers (say that 5 times fast!) are made from non-gmo soy. The OG red boxes are made from gmo soy.

When I walked out of the convention center I was dragging a enormous bag of samples and the sun was going down. It was a long, very fun, very delicious day!
